Frequently Asked Questions

  • Reproductive psychiatry is a highly specialized area of psychiatric practice focused on the complex interplay between mental health, hormones, fertility, pregnancy, postpartum care, and reproductive transitions.

Psychiatric treatment decisions during these periods often require sophisticated risk-benefit analysis and expertise beyond general psychiatric practice—particularly when balancing maternal mental health, medication safety, reproductive goals, and family planning considerations.

Patients seek Dr. Ross for nuanced, evidence-based guidance in complex clinical situations requiring specialized reproductive psychiatric expertise and elevated individualized care.

  • In the United States, physician education is highly structured and rigorously regulated, setting the gold standard for medical training. Physicians undergo an extensive educational journey—typically 9-10 years of graduate education—and accumulate approximately 23,000 hours of clinical training before practicing independently. This comprehensive training ensures a deep understanding of medical science and a high level of clinical expertise.

In contrast, non-MD/DO prescribers may sometimes complete as little as one year of graduate education with around 600 clinical shadowing hours. This significance, in both the duration and intensity of training, highlights a difference in the level of expertise between physicians and non-MDs/DOs.

When considering mental health care, it's crucial to recognize these differences. The rigorous training of physicians equips them with a breadth and depth of knowledge that ensures they are highly qualified to diagnose and treat complex psychiatric conditions. Understanding the difference between physicians and other types of prescribers can guide you in making informed decisions about your mental health care provider.

  • We are an “out-of-network” provider, meaning we do not accept insurance. This is for a few reasons. The first is our commitment to providing the highest quality care. Insurance companies can get in the way of the highest quality of care, such as by limiting appointment time or appointment frequency. Insurance company reimbursement at times incentivizes more medication and problem-focused, rather than allowing a holistic, preventative treatment that may or may not involve medication. Finally, dealing with insurance results in a large administrative burden that is just not feasible for us as a small private practice. We would rather spend our time with you, not with insurance companies.

However, we can provide you with a superbill (an itemized list of services provided) that you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. Many patients have had successful insurance reimbursement with this method. We cannot guarantee what portion of the bill your insurance company will pay, and we do not contact the out-of-network insurance on your behalf.

    Our costs are:

    • $375 for an initial intake appointment or one-time consultation (generally about 60-90 minutes).

    • $225 for follow-up medication management visits (generally about 15-25 minutes).

  • If this is a crisis and you are not able to immediately get in touch with Artemis Reproductive Psychiatry, please do NOT wait for us to return your message. Please act to keep you or your loved one safe.

In the event of a mental health emergency, please contact emergency services or go to the nearest emergency room for immediate assistance.

  • If you have paperwork that you would like Dr. Ross to fill out (such as short term disability forms), please note that the decision to fill out this paperwork is at Dr. Ross’ discretion. An additional appointment may be needed to fill out requested paperwork as well as additional time, so please plan accordingly.

We do not fill out longterm disability forms, custody forms, or forensic evaluations through this practice. We do not fill out paperwork for Emotional Support Animals.

  • We understand that circumstances may arise that require you to cancel or reschedule your appointment. However, we kindly request that you provide us with at least 24 hours notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment.

Any arrival after 10 minutes after your appointment’s scheduled start time will be considered a missed appointment and need to be rescheduled. You will be charged for the full appointment. We do understand that emergencies arise, and we will waive the fee for a missed or late cancelled appointment once per year, on a case by case basis and upon inquiry.

If you do not provide at least one business day’s notice for a cancellation or if you miss your appointment without notifying us, you will be charged in full for the appointment. This fee must be paid before scheduling your next appointment.

Repeated cancellations or no shows may necessitate discharge from the practice.

  • Dr. Ross sees patients virtually and can see patients located in Michigan, Ohio, and New Jersey. Please note that you must be in one of those states at the time of each appointment.
